FROZEN
Bends to pick up a newspaper from the floor
Eyes drawn to the headline
“Indigenous Girl Found Frozen on the Road”
Lump form in throat, looking at the photograph
The young indigenous woman
Her body discarded in a back alley
Once vibrant and beautiful face was now distorted
Long black hair matted with blood.
Quickly crumples newspaper
not wanting to dwell on the harsh reality
Another taken too soon by senseless violence
Freedom cut short
But her memory would be a Frozen
Like a chunk of ice in time
A powerful force for change
The fight for justice for Indigenous women
